AAV Packaged on Request
Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are safe and useful gene delivery tools that effectively transduce many mammalian cell types. AAV is used in a wide range of experiments, both in vitro and in vivo. It has low immunogenicity, is easy to use, and can be safely handled at the lowest biosafety protection levels.
We offer 955 in-stock viral vector preps, delivering high quality and ready availability at affordable prices. While our repository serves the needs of many researchers, scientists sometimes require preps beyond our current in-stock capabilities. To meet that need, our Packaged on Request service lets scientists choose from over 3,000 transfer plasmids to be packaged in their choice of five serotypes, resulting in over 15,000 possible choices!
By using AAV Packaged on Request, scientists can start experiments as soon as they receive their AAV prep from Addgene — eliminating the steps to produce, purify, and titer viral vectors.
Our new Packaged on Request service is recommended for research-grade use. Many chemogenetic, optogenetic, recombinase, and biosensor transfer plasmids in our repository are eligible for this service.
Select any eligible plasmid in the Addgene repository in your choice of:
- serotype (AAV1, AAV2, AAV5, AAV8, or AAVrg) and
- volume (1 mL, 2.5 mL, or 5 mL).
Currently, we can only package plasmids in our collection in the serotypes listed here.

Scale and Titer
Packaged on Request can be ordered in three sizes. For all viral vector preparations, we set both minimum standards and typical titers, though actual yields may vary by construct.
Size | Quantity | Total Volume | Minimum Titer | Typical Titer |
---|---|---|---|---|
Small | 10 × 100 µL aliquots | 1 mL | 4 × 1012 GC/mL* | 1 × 1013 GC/mL* |
Medium | 25 × 100 µL aliquots | 2.5 mL | ||
Large | 50 × 100 µL aliquots | 5 mL |
*AAV2 yields are generally lower, with a minimum titer of 2 × 1012 GC/mL and a typical titer of 7 × 1012 GC/mL.

Request and Ordering Process
AAV production will take approximately 6–8 weeks. Additional steps, including request approval, your institution’s approval of the MTA, and shipping, mean that the actual time from request to delivery could be up to 10 weeks.
This breaks down as follows:
- Request
-
1–2 daysLook for the banner on an eligible plasmid page and place your request. We will send you an email within 1-2 days with a response. Most requests will be approved within two business days!
- Ordering
-
At your convenienceAfter approval, the next step is yours: you must place your order to begin production. You can do this whenever you are ready.
- MTA Approval
-
1+ business days, varies by requesting organizationViral vector preps remain subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable transfer plasmid. We will help you gain legal usage of the transfer plasmid from the providing scientist through an MTA. This process typically takes 1–4 days, depending on your institution.
- AAV Production
-
6–8 weeksQuality is our priority. During this time, we amplify DNA, produce the prep, and perform comprehensive quality control processes to make sure it is ready for your experiments.
- Shipping
-
2–7 daysWe will email you with tracking information as soon as your order ships. Shipping time will depend on your location.
Eligible Plasmids
The following plasmids are eligible for this service. Submit a request and we’ll let you know whether the item can be packaged.
Addgene does not perform functional or in vivo testing. We recommend that you consult the original paper of your chosen AAV plasmid for more information on its performance.
